Sunday Snapshots – Natural World Edition

My response to today’s Daily PromptDescribe your first memorable experience exploring and spending time in nature. Were you in awe? Or were you not impressed? Would you rather spend time in the forest or the city?

Born in the city, raised in the suburbs, I prefer to spend as much time surrounded by nature as possible. Not that the city lacks anything of worth to offer, it is just that the natural soundtrack found there is more soothing than the city can compare.

My first encounter with nature was the 1/4 of an acre that belonged to our farm. It was cut off by a county road and bisected by a meandering creek. Wild elderberries, ash trees, sedge grass, and wild flowers grew there. It offered a secluded spot away from parents for playing our games. That would be me telling my brother what we were playing and making up plots.

I’ve been lucky in that the river wasn’t too far from where I lived. The same goes for waterfalls and streams (more importantly, the Sound). That’s what I miss with the downing of the Bendigo Block – a large evergreen tree that my friend and I dared to climb every warm day – finding a perfect ‘perch’ near the top.
